Driving schools are almost a thing of the past, at least in the US. In comparison to Europe or at least Finland, which is the European country I am most familiar with, the need for driving schools is much less as attending them is not required to acquire a driving license.
One is only obligated to go to driving school if he or she has been convicted of a traffic related crime, such as driving while drunk. However, my cousin became familiar with the ins and outs of driving schools as he was one of those who had been convicted of a traffic related crime, and was therefore forced to enroll to one of these driving schools.
He was immediately on the defensive when I asked him about attending the school. He quickly went into a rant about how he shouldn't be forced to undertake such measures, and how he was barely over the legal alcohol limit when he was pulled over by a police officer. He claimed that the rules are much different for women, as they can sweet talk their way out of those situations.
This was when I had to intercede, and say that although I am sure that happens sometimes, it doesn't excuse the fact that he should not have been driving at the time. I sort of lectured him at that point, and told him he could have killed someone and asked if he wanted to live the rest of his life with something like that hanging over his head. Of course, he didn't and the conversation seemed to have had an impact on him because he stopped complaining about his having to attend the school. Moreover, he was able to pass the course with flying colors, and he hasn't had a traffic mishap since.
I also believe that the incident had a positive effect on our relationship. We hadn't really been communicating much during that point in our lives, but after that interaction he started to confide in me about personal matters quite often. He also began to ask my opinion about his life decisions.
I was quite happy to talk to him, as I always considered him my favorite relative. I'm not sure that he felt the same way about me, but it seems now that our relationship has become much more active which is a very nice thing.
